TORONTO, Ont. – The provincial Conservatives have tabled a motion in the Ontario legislature, Thursday, which fights for a moratorium on wind farms.

The motion calls for the suspension of all wind projects until an independent health study can be done.

In Huron-Bruce, Conservative MPP Lisa Thompson said the region has become home to many wind farms, which is tearing the community apart and pitting neighbours against neighbours.

“Many real communities are being torn apart, as wind turbine projects are developed in a top-down approach, as opposed to a bottom-up community buy in approach,” Thompson said.

“The physical, social and environmental and health effects are still unconfirmed,” she added, saying an independent environmental and health review needs to be carried out before going any further.

The Conservatives also want the province to give municipalities jurisdiction over wind farms – deciding whether wind turbines can go up and where. Energy Minister Chris Bentley said he would be happy to give them a louder voice, but he will not let them have the final say.

Wind energy supporters, meanwhile, say there is no proof of any negative health issues.

The debate wrapped up Thursday without a vote being held.
