The battle against turbines

by Rick Stow, www.bayshorebroadcasting.ca 14 February 2012

Huron East’s representative on the Inter-Municipal Wind Turbine Working Group says Tory MPP Lisa Thompson has caught the attention of the government.

Gerry Ryan has appeared before Council on a number of occasions as a member of HEAT, Huron East Against Turbines – but not this time.

He is taking the place of Huron East’s municipal delegate, Robert Tetu, at the Inter-Municipal Wind Turbine Working Group, for a couple of months.

Ryan has provided Council members with an update on activities and issues.

After meeting for two years, the Working Group is now drafting its mission statement.

Ryan noted that the Ontario Federation of Agriculture is now calling for a moratorium on wind turbine development.

He believes Ontario’s largest Farming organization is listening to its members.

The Working Group Representative thinks the Chatham-Kent Tribunal’s finding that turbines do affect health will result in the courts getting more involved in the Green Energy Act process.

Ryan warned Council that developers are boosting the size of approved projects with a strategy called “filling.”

He says the Samsung project in Kincardine has expanded to 99 units from the proposed 50 using this argument.

Ryan says the St. Columban project has also morphed into something bigger.

He told Councillors that they should be closing any legal loopholes that help developers– a municipality’s Official Plan should not contradict its by-laws.
