Wind effect on animals

Wind development in Huron County could have a serious impact on the region’s wetlands and certain animal species.
Speaking at a Community Forum in Goderich last week – University of Western Ontario Professor Scott Petrie tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the 427 wind turbines proposed for Huron County are a huge concern.
He says right his University class is doing research with the little amount of money they have.
Petrie tells us the class is tracking birds by satellite and doing habitat analysis.
Petrie adds they examine habitat and get a good look at how turbines affect it both on shore and off shore.
Petrie was in Denmark 6 years ago and says he learned a lot about wildlife and turbines.
He notes he would like to see a similar rule in Denmark made here in Ontario.
In Denmark Petrie tells us turbines are not placed within a kilometre of a wet land.
Petrie calls agricultural fields close to the lakeshore very important for wildlife and more studies must be done.
As for species that could be endangered – Petrie says many small birds, Tundra Swans, and Bats are at risk from the potential effects of turbines.
Petrie advises to each do our own research on wind development.
