Siting Council gives 8 parties right to argue against BNE

NEW BRITAIN – Opposition to proposed wind turbine power generation projects is rising in Colebrook.

The Connecticut Siting Council on Thursday, meeting at its New Britain office, approved eight applications from Colebrook residents seeking party status, or the ability to present evidence against siting wind turbines. It was the second time the board, which has the ultimate authority to decide if wind power projects may be built, acted on applications from BNE Energy Inc. of West Hartford.

BNE wants to build six General Electric 1.6 megawatt turbines, each measuring 462 feet from the base to the tip of the blade, in Colebrook. Three are planned for Flagg Hill Road and three for Rock Hall Road. Residents opposed to the project cited alleged effects wind turbines may have on health and raised concerns about a negative impact on property values.

Somers and others that requested party status, including FairwindCT a nonprofit formed to fight the wind turbines, will be allowed to submit evidence before the upcoming hearings. They also open themselves to cross examination by BNE representatives.
