PUC ruling favors wind line changes

What may perhaps be an early Christmas present for opponents of wind transmission lines in the Hill Country came Dec. 1 as the Public Utility Commissioners (PUC) in Austin ruled on a plan to replace some proposed lines with cost-effective and less intrusive alternatives.

The order commissioners signed replaces the proposed Gillespie-to-Newton (near Lampasas) and (Comfort) Kendall-to-Gillespie Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) lines with 64 miles of alternative lines.

Substituted will be reconductored or reconstructed areas including:

•Seven miles of circuit between Killeen and Killeen Elm in Bell County,

•40 miles between Kendall and Miller Creek in Blanco County, and,

•17 miles between Miller Creek and Paleface in Travis County.

•Also, additional autotransformer capacity will be added at Kendall.

Any motion for a rehearing must be filed within 20 days of the order.

These alternative projects are due to be completed by Dec. 31, 2013.
