FPL Energy looking to build 840 MW of Ontario wind capacity

FPL Energy plans to build at least eight wind farm projects in Ontario,
with a capacity of more than 840 MW, it said Tuesday.

FPL spokesman Steve Stengel said the four Ontario projects that are the
furthest along are an 84-MW project in Lambton County and three 9-MW projects
at nearby sites in the southwest of the province.

Juno Beach, Florida-based FPL plans to submit the 84-MW project into the
Ontario Power Authority’s upcoming solicitation for 500 MW of renewable power,
and expects to enter into “standard offer contracts” with the OPA on the three
9-MW projects, Stengel said.

He said the company is also in the “very early stages” of developing four
other large wind projects in Ontario that it will likely submit as responses
to future requests for proposals planned by OPA. In August 2007, OPA was
authorized by the Ontario Energy Ministry to secure 2,000 MW of extra wind and
other renewable capacity.

The four FPL projects in the very early stages of development include a
349.5-MW project in Lambton and Middlesex counties; a 249-MW project in
Lambton County; and 87-MW and 63-MW projects in Huron County.

According to “connection assessment” filings with Ontario’s Independent
Electricity System Operator, FPL hopes to begin commercial operation of the
84-MW Lambton County project in the fourth quarter of 2009, and the 349.5-MW
and 249-MW projects in the fourth quarter of 2013. FPL has not stated when it
hopes to bring the two Huron County projects online.
