As requested by Frances Hogan, Brian Howe of EGC Engineering made an extended appearance at the Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Council meeting on May 15 regarding wind turbine noise, vibration, and acoustics.
Howe, described at council as a noise expert, has worked on wind energy farms across the country and shared his experiences with those present.
“For example in Nova Scotia,” he said to the packed council chambers that included more than 20 area residents, “it was quite densely packed with 17 turbines. The closest turbine to a residence was about 300 metres, and there were probably six or seven within 1000 metres of another gentleman’s home.”
“Most of the time the sound was as we would expect, given the distances,” he said. “The problems occurred when low winds and fog carried the sound when the turbines were running.”
