FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 14, 2011
As a public service, the Eco Awareness Society (EAS) will present the Maritime debut of Laura Israel’s Award Winning Film “Windfall” at Strathspey Place, Mabou, Nova Scotia on Tuesday, May 24th, 7:00 P.M.

EAS is a non-profit organization that promotes awareness and understanding of ecological and energy principles through scientific evidence. The society formed in 2007 to make available, evidence and information on industrial wind power projects that wind industry proponents and the provincial government will not provide. “Our goal is to protect the unique nature and culture of Nova Scotia and preserve it for future generations,” said society spokesperson, Susan Overmyer. “We are delighted to be able to bring this amazing documentary to Cape Breton,” she said.

“Windfall”, a beautifully photographed feature length film, documents how a proposal for 40 industrial wind turbines in the rural, upstate New York farm town of Meredith divides residents as they fight over the future of their community.

Attracted at first to the financial incentives that would seemingly boost their dying economy, a group of towns people grow increasingly alarmed as they discover the impacts that the 400-foot high windmills slated for Meredith could bring to their community.

“Given the recent proposal of a massive wind project near the Cabot Trail as well as the proposed project for the Mabou Highlands, this film will be a preview of what may be coming to Cape Breton,” said Ms. Overmyer.

Laura Israel’s documentary, “Windfall”, looks at both sides of wind energy development. It is an eye-opener that should be required viewing for anyone concerned about the environment and the future of renewable energy.

There will be a question and answer session via Skype with the producer following the film. Admission is free.
