The term “wind energy” usually refers to the generation of electricity from the wind.

In the typical horizontal-axis 3-blade design, the kinetic energy of the wind creates lift on one side of each blade in the same way as an airplane wing. The blades thus pull themselves around and turn the rotor hub on which they are mounted, which turns a turbine that generates electricity.
