Nimby

NIMBY is an acronym for “not in my backyard”.

It is used negatively, to imply that someone is opposed to a development only because it would affect them and their neighborhood, and that they would otherwise not oppose it and might even support it, in other words, that they are acting selfishly with no regard to others (rather like a wind developer —Editor).

People often do not become informed about an issue until it threatens to affect them personally, and their primary focus is then to protect their own interests.

That does not necessarily mean that they support imposing the adverse effects of a development on others. Some campaigners have suggested that NIMBY be seen as an acronym for “next it might by you”.
