Concern at impact of Forth windfarm on East Lothian

Concern about the visual impact of an offshore windfarm with up to 125 turbines in the sea off the “world-class” East Lothian coast has been raised by East Lothian Council.

Members of the Labour/Conservative ruling group are calling for Marine Scotland to review the environmental report’s assessment of the magnitude of the effect the Neart na Gaoithe (might of the wind) project would have on the county’s landscape and seascape.

The development, which would take two years to construct, would be 17 miles from Dunbar, 19 from North Berwick and nine from Fife Ness in the Firth of Forth.

Deputy council leader Councillor Michael Veitch (pictured) (Con) told a meeting of the cabinet on Tuesday: “Whatever one’s views on the merits or otherwise of off-shore wind generation generally, I’m sure we would all agreed that this proposed wind farm will have enormous implications for East Lothian and must therefore be subject to the utmost levels of scrutiny by this local authority.”
