Delegates adamantly opposed to turbines on state land

Editor’s note: The writers of the following letter to John Griffin, secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, requested that it appear in this column.

Dear Secretary Griffin:

We, the undersigned members of the Western Maryland Delegation, would like to voice our adamant opposition to the placement of wind turbines on state property. Although wind technology may have a place in Maryland’s energy portfolio, we do not believe the location of commercial wind power facilities on state land is appropriate.

It has been pointed out in the Maryland Energy Administration’s recent report, “there is no silver bullet” in dealing with Maryland’s energy concerns. As such, the exploitation of western Maryland’s pristine forests for private gain must not be permitted.

Therefore, we stand with the many citizens of western Maryland who have voiced their strong opposition at the two public hearings held by your department. We hope you will listen to the people who make western Maryland their home and establish a policy prohibiting wind turbines on public lands.

Sincerely,
Western Maryland Delegates:

Wendell R. Beitzel
Joseph R. Bartlett
Kevin Kelly
Paul S. Stull
LeRoy E.Myers Jr.
Donald B.Elliott
Robert A. McKee
Tanya T. Shewell
Christopher B. Shank
Nancy R.Stocksdale
John P. Donoghue
Susan W. Krebs
Galen R. Clagett
C. Sue Hech
Richard B. Weldon

and Senators:

George C. Edward
David R. Brinkley
Donald F. Munson
Larry E. Haines
Alex X. Mooney
Allan H. Kittleman
