. . . Complete story »

P.E.I. wind turbines at ‘high risk of imminent failure,’ consultant warned province in 2022

A consultant hired in 2022 to assess production problems at a wind farm owned by the P.E.I. government found severe damage, with turbine units possibly constituting a safety hazard and turbine blades at “high risk of imminent failure.” Last month, high winds ripped two 56-metre blades off one of the turbines at the facility in Hermanville, near the northeastern tip of Prince Edward Island. For comparison, the province’s tallest building is only 39 metres tall; it’s the 10-storey Holman Grand . . . Complete story »

Understanding arc flash risk in wind turbine renewables

With the increasing use of wind turbines as a renewable energy source, it is important to address the potential risks associated with arc flash incidents. Electrical Safety UK, Deputy MD Paul Hopton highlights the additional considerations in a wind turbine environment and emphasises the consequences of arc flash accidents. Let’s look at some of the accidents and incidents that have been reported: In Palm Springs, California in 2000 an operator suffered severe burns from electrical fault in a fuse holder. . . . Bridge truly bashed

A truck transporting a large wind turbine blade crashed into a bridge on a road in Poland last week, bringing it down. The incident occurred overnight on December 28th on Poland’s DK3/E65 highway between Dargobądz and Wolin in the north east. A beam on the bridge, which is currently under construction, was caught by the base of the 100 metre blade, pulling it off its stanchions. Thankfully no was hurt in the incident. The driver was sober but has been . . . Complete story »

Gearboxes removed from 3-year-old wind turbines

Here’s what’s being removed from the duds from the western part of Alliant Energy’s Whispering Willow North windpower facility in Franklin County, Iowa. They have been dropping the blades on one unit after another for the past 2 years. There are 15 units that just sit idle most of the time, and another 10 that are getting serviced. These gearboxes are being removed from the units and dropped by the uplink 350-KV substation. We happened to pull up just as . . . Complete story »

Giant turbine blades scattered by storms leads to safety calls from locals

The giant blades of a 34-metre wind turbine broke off and flew through the air during Storm Gerritt. Dramatic footage of the incident also revealed large parts of the fibreglass structure were left embedded in the ground due to the force of winds during Storm Gerrit in Galston, Ayrshire. The damage was caused a few miles from a residential area and has led to calls for a stricter safety crackdown on turbines close to homes and businesses. A resident rang . . . Complete story »

Wind turbine spins out of control and flies apart

Storm Gerrit brought winds of up to 85mph on Wednesday. In such conditions, wind turbines feather their blades and brake the rotor. The brakes seem to have failed in a turbine at Newhouse Farm, Auchencloigh, in Ayrshire, which spun out of control until the blades broke and flew off. The dramatic event was captured on video, as posted on Facebook: The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service had received report of a fire before the turbine broke apart. The wind turbine . . .
