Rural resident sounds a warning: Wind turbines are not the solutions
It’s no secret that being denied a good night’s sleep prevents us from firing on all cylinders; trying to work with continual irritating sounds can be just as mind-rattling. While many residents of downtown Ottawa suffered weeks of sleepless nights due to horn honking during the 2022 convoy, residents of rural Ontario have been enduring years of restless nights and are still waiting to have their grievances about wind turbines heard. The turbines produce a low-frequency sound that is irritating. . . . Complete story »
McKee allows solar developers’ tax break to become law despite opposition by cities, towns
A [Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns] spokesman told legislators the solar developers' bill would "create preferential tax treatment for ALL renewable energy projects and tax them differently from any other revenue-generating commercial operation,'' pushing those lost revenues onto other taxpayers. --- [Green Development] was founded by Mark DePasquale, who along with other political contributors who list Green Development as their employer have given more than $92,000 to Rhode Island office-holders and candidates since 2015. That includes $4,300 to McKee. Complete story »
Blow to wind power revolution as grid struggles to keep up
Samuel Rickitt is among the many green energy entrepreneurs trying to meet the Government’s call for a boom in green electricity generation. But as he sets out trying to set up a new 49.9MW solar park in Staffordshire, he has come up against a problem: several other new energy projects are in the works nearby, and the local substation needs to be upgraded so they can safely join the electricity grid. Mr Rickitt, director of operations at RevolutionNRG, has been . . . Complete story »
Anti-wind farm forces blast petition drive
An effort to collect the 1,182 signatures needed to have voters decide on the future of wind energy in the county has angered wind farm opponents. On May 5, Crawford County commissioners passed a resolution blocking wind farm development in all unincorporated areas of the county, effectively barring construction of Honey Creek Wind, Apex Clean Energy’s planned 300-megawatt industrial wind farm. But under the terms of Senate Bill 52, which became law in July, wind farm supporters have 30 days . . . Complete story »
Landowners lose battle over southern Alberta wind farm but still consider it a win
The Alberta Utilities Commission has approved a major wind farm in Vulcan County, with a list of conditions, saying “the negative impacts of the project can be mitigated to an acceptable degree and are outweighed by the benefits of the project.” The project by a subsidiary of ABO Wind includes 83 wind turbines on 7,080 hectares of privately owned farmland near Lomond, Alta., about 175 kilometres southeast of Calgary. Many landowners in the area joined together to fight the application, . . . Complete story »
Senate group votes to end ACC energy-policy authority
PHOENIX – Rejecting arguments about economic development, clean air and even constitutional issues, a Senate panel voted along party lines Wednesday to strip the Arizona Corporation Commission of its power to set energy policy for utilities. The 6-4 vote by the Senate Appropriations Committee followed arguments by Rep. Gail Griffin, R-Hereford, that it was wrong of the independently elected utility regulators to propose that half of the state’s energy be generated by carbon-free sources by 2035 and have power be totally . . . Councillors seek to protect ‘unique’ local landscape
Members of the Baltinglass Municipal District have expressed their opposition to proposals to develop a wind farm at Kilranelagh north of Baltinglass, calling for west Wicklow’s ‘unique landscape’ to be protected. The matter was raised on Monday during Baltinglass Municipal District’s January meeting which was held via Zoom. Last week, ABO Wind lodged an application seeking permission to develop five 165m wind turbines and associated infrastructure at Kilranelagh Hill. However, Wicklow County Council’s planning section ruled the application incomplete as . . . Complete story »
Backlash over plans for 250-metre wind turbines on Anglesey
The Welsh Government should insist on solar panels being mandatory on new buildings rather than “using Anglesey as a factory to generate electricity for the rest of Wales.” That’s the view of one councillor amid the authority’s condemnation of proposed planning guidelines which include a “presumption” that a vast swathe of central Anglesey – one of several areas across Wales – is suitable for solar and wind farms up to 250 metres in height. The Welsh Government is currently consulting . . . Complete story »
Environment ministry follows defence ministry in calling for Sõnajalg wind farm halt
Outgoing environmental minister Siim Kiisler (Isamaa) has demanded the halting of the long-running construction of the Aidu wind farm. The wind farm, at Aidu, in the Maidla municipality in Ida-Viru County, is the brainchild of the Sõnajalg brothers, entrepreneurs and some-time members of a popular music band. The two brothers state that they got permission from Maidla municipality in 2013 and that this is still valid. In July 2018, another ministry, defence, had already said that construction must halt because . . . Complete story »
Tamworth candidates weigh in on divisive Nundle wind farm
Candidates in the state race for the seat of Tamworth have weighed in on the controversial $600-million 98-turbine Nundle wind farm. Shooters, Fishers and Farmers candidate Jeff Bacon said he was firmly against the development, siting potential impacts to the region’s water system, and backs calls for a hydrological study. “The site is like a sponge for water that releases into three river systems,” he said. “This is a unique site that if damaged could have a detrimental effect on . . .
