Vulture’s death by wind turbine could have been avoided, says minister

The death of the bearded vulture which was hit by the blade of a wind turbine in Wieringerwerf in May, could have been prevented if an advanced bird detection system had been in place, caretaker agriculture minister Carola Schouten has said in answer to MPs’ questions. Bearded vultures, whose wingspan can reach some three metres, are one of the largest birds in Europe and on the ‘near threatened’ list of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, which means . . . Fleet of over 50 fishing boats take to the Ijsselmeer in protest of wind farms

Fishers from Urk and Harderwijk took the Ijsselmeer on Saturday to demonstrate against the wind farms near the enclosing dike. The wind farms take away space to catch eel and scale fish, the fishers said. “People need to understand that a wind farm is not the remedy for everything”, leader of the protest Anja Keuter said to De Stentor. Currently, there are 89 wind turbines in the water near Breezanddijk where the protest was held on Saturday. “So many areas . . . Complete story »

Construction of 25 wind parks uncertain after ruling

A recent ruling by the Council of State about a wind farm in Delfzijl will have consequences for at least 25 other wind farm projects, newspaper Trouw reports. The Council of State ruled that construction on the Delfzijl wind farm could not start because there was no assessment on the environmental consequences of the project, such as noise pollution and the creation of cast shadows. Such an assessment is mandatory under European rules, the Council of State ruled. At least . . . Complete story »

Wind farm projects face delays after court orders more environmental research

The construction of a number of wind farms in the Netherlands will be delayed following a Council of State ruling which ordered more research into the environmental impact of a project in Groningen. Junior environment minister Dilan Yesilgöz has told MPs in a briefing that 20 to 25 projects currently still at the planning stage could be delayed by the ruling. Together, they will produce enough electricity for 500,000 homes, the minister said. The Council of State, which is the . . . Complete story »

New wind parks in the Netherlands frustrated by court ruling

On 30 June 2021, the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State (Afdeling bestuursrechtspraak van de Raad van State) issued its judgment in a case regarding the provincial executive (Gedeputeerde Staten) of Groningen’s permit issuance for the expansion of a wind park close to Delfzijl. According to the Administrative Jurisdiction Division, the general wind turbine standards currently used to license the realization of the majority of wind farms do not comply with European rules. The current Dutch standards are included in . . . Complete story »

Doctors concerned about planned wind turbines’ proximity to residential neighborhoods

A number of doctors are worried about plans to build wind turbines close to residential neighborhoods, they said to the Telegraaf. They’ve asked an independent epidemiologist to study a number of reports from public health institute RIVM on how close these turbines can be placed to homes. The results are expected in eight weeks. While the epidemiologist’s analysis is not done yet, the doctors – united under the name Windwiki – believe that wind turbines’ proximity to residential neighborhoods could . . . Complete story »

RIVM investigates effects of noisy wind turbines on health amid growing protests

Dutch health institute RIVM is going to further investigate the health implications of wind turbines following research showing that the noise they generate can affect people’s well-being. The RIVM is now setting up a so-called ‘expertise centre’ where scientific data on the subject will be collected and analysed, broadcaster NOS said. Wind and solar energy have an important role in the efforts to achieve a 49% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, but local protests against the arrival of noisy . . . Complete story »

Firm behind Dublin wind-energy project suing Netherlands for €1.4bn over plans to shut coal plants

The company leading plans for Dublin’s first offshore wind farm is suing the Netherlands for €1.4billion over its plans to shut coal plants. International energy firm RWE lodged the compensation claim after the Dutch government adopted a climate-action policy that will see coal power phased out by 2030. Its clean energy arm, RWE Renewables, is meanwhile leading the development of the Dublin Array, a wind farm of up to 61 turbines for which an application for planning permission is to . . .
