Work suspended at wind farm in Northern Greece

The suspension of all work for the construction of a wind farm at Aetorrachi Nymfaio in northern Greece and the removal of machinery parked near the entrance to the settlement was ordered on Monday by a court in Florina, following an appeal from the Kallisto and Arcturos environmental organizations and other groups. Florina court halts wind farm construction at Nymfaio

A court in Florina, northern Greece, ruled the temporary suspension of all construction works for a wind farm at Nymfaio, following a request by two environmental organisations and local residents, it was reported on Monday. Machinery found 1 km before the entrance to the construction site at Aetorachi, Nymfaio, will have to be removed, the court added. Peloponnese tourism body protests against wind farm plan on Mt Menalon

Tourism professionals in the Peloponnese are up in arms over a decision to create a wind farm between the traditional mountain villages of Stemnitsa and Chrisovitsi on Mt Menalon in Arcadia. Citing the importance of the region’s natural habitat as well as of its key role in Greek history, the Peloponnese Tourism Organization is calling on Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) to revoke a January 1, 2021 decision which allows the installation of 54 wind turbines on Mount Menalon. . . . Pelican deaths spark debate on wind farm locations

A debate has begun again about the location of wind farms in a nature protection area near Lake Prespa in northern Greece after three pelicans died flying into wind turbines on Sunday. According to seven environmental organizations, the turbines, on a ridge of Mount Varnous, were equipped with a system to prevent collisions with large birds, but proved inadequate. Ministry of Environment halted the South Aegean wind and interconnector projects

In a joint letter to the Prime Minister of Greece and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, 12 environmental NGOs and Scientific Societies call for the cancellation of wind farm development plans on 14 protected islets in the South Aegean. Backlash grows over Greek energy deregulation law

Condemnation has been particularly acute on islands where opposition to proposed wind farms has become ever more violent and where people are incensed they were never asked about projects that will directly affect their lives.
