Next generation wind turbines in Minnesota could be 60 stories high

WATERTOWN, S.D. – The blades of the giant propellers sprouting from cornfields look like they’re almost dragging on the ground. The Dakota Range 1 & 2 wind farm under construction near here will sport the largest turbines of any of Xcel Energy’s many wind projects – and even bigger turbines are on tap for southwestern Minnesota. The yet-to-be built Plum Creek project will feature turbines 655 feet tall when their blades are fully extended, about 160 feet higher than Xcel’s new . . . Complete story »

Proposed North Bend wind project splits landowners in central South Dakota

Several farmers from the area said they supported a wind project proposed in central South Dakota while several others spoke against it Wednesday night at a public input hearing. The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission must decide no later than March 23, 2022, whether to permit the North Bend wind farm that Engie North America wants in western Hyde and eastern Hughes counties. Engie representative Casey Willis said the 71-turbine project would cost $265 million to $285 million. If all . . . Complete story »

Regulators weigh ‘end plan’ for Buffalo Ridge II

The lawyers are going to work some more on what should happen when the Buffalo Ridge II wind farm in eastern South Dakota reaches the end of its service life. The state Public Utilities Commission discussed the proposal Tuesday with attorneys representing Iberdrola Renewables. The international company owns the turbines and related equipment. They agreed that Brett Koenecke, a Pierre lawyer for the company, should find different phrasing for the plan, so that the commission isn’t designated as a beneficiary . . . Complete story »

French company wants to build second wind farm in South Dakota

A multinational French energy company, Engie, gained approval Tuesday to begin the permitting process for a $285 million proposed wind farm in South Dakota. The North Bend Wind Project would be Engie’s second wind farm in the state. The 200 megawatt, 71-turbine wind farm would be located on nearly 47,000 acres in Hughes and Hyde counties, south of Harrold and north of the Crow Creek Reservation and Missouri River. North Bend made its first appearance before the Public Utilities Commission . . . Complete story »

Wind-power project proposed south of Harrold

State regulators have received a permit application for another wind-power project in central South Dakota. ENGIE North America wants to build the 71-turbine North Bend project between Harrold and the Missouri River in western Hyde and eastern Hughes counties. The state Public Utilities Commission has tentatively scheduled a community meeting for August 11. ENGIE has the Triple H wind farm just east of the 200-megawatt North Bend project. South Dakota rocked again as a wind turbine plant shuts its doors

John F. Kerry, the special presidential envoy for climate, said only months ago that those losing fossil fuel jobs in coal and hydraulic fracturing will find they have a better choice in jobs in either the solar industry or as wind turbine technicians. That was then. Now, a wind blade manufacturing plant located in Aberdeen, South Dakota has announced it is shutting its doors permanently in less than two months. The disappearance of Molded Fiber Glass will displace over three . . . Complete story »

S.D. regulators want wind-project reports

The state Public Utilities Commission plans to start having wind project developers file periodic progress reports on a voluntary basis for their South Dakota sites. The purpose is to assist the commission in ensuring that developers comply with permit conditions in a timely manner. South Dakota has seen 25 wind projects that required permits. “We tried to make it as short as possible but still get the information that we need, and I think we were able to accomplish that,” . . . S.D. wind farm gets extra time to file report

A new wind farm already producing electricity in northeastern South Dakota will get an additional four months to comply with a reporting deadline. The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission agreed Tuesday that Tatanka Ridge Wind LLC can have until August 5 to file drawings to the agency. But commissioners decided that in the meantime the 56-turbine project, near Toronto and Brandt in Deuel County, must submit twice-monthly updates. The commission’s November 27, 2019, permit for the project included a condition . . . Complete story »

South Dakota’s wind farm boom likely at end of its tailwind, say state officials

PIERRE, S.D. – The wind farm tsunami generating record one-time money for the state legislature this past cycle may’ve been a circumstantial fluke. “In 2018, we permitted three wind farms. In 2019, six wind farms. In 2020, one wind farm,” Chris Nelson, chair of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission, told Forum News Service on Tuesday, April 13. “And we have got none on our plate right now.” Earlier on Tuesday, the South Dakota PUC approved an extension on a post-construction . . .
