Ariz. renewable measure fails as Nev. sees split decision

Voters in Arizona trounced a proposal to require more renewable energy yesterday, while Nevadans backed a similar measure but easily defeated a plan to usher in retail electric choice. The results capped months of campaigning that saw tens of millions of dollars pour in from utility and clean energy interests. The mixed outcome offers a window into the priorities of Western voters as they weigh different forms of energy and the role of mandates and competition. Opponents of Arizona’s renewable . . . Question 6 opposed by informed conservationists

Nevada’s goal of achieving 50 percent of electricity from renewables, according to recent Harvard engineering estimates, requires 16.65 percent of the state’s landmass (18,409 square miles) to be covered by solar/wind turbine facilities, which equals every square foot of Clark, Washoe, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties, plus Carson City region and all major towns in other counties combined. Pro Question 6 propaganda states, “Thirteen states, including Colorado and Oregon, have renewable energy standards stronger than Nevada’s …” Notice the omission . . . Complete story »

Wind power and warming

Two papers published Oct. 4 in the journals Joule and Environmental Research Letters by Harvard University researchers find that the transition to wind or solar power would require five to 20 times more land then previously thought and, if such large wind farms were built, it would warm average surface temperatures in the continental United States by 0.4 degrees. Question 6 locks us into 50 percent reliance on energy sources that create this dubious environmental impact. We don’t know what . . . Complete story »

Wind energy developer eyeing Nevada, backs Question 6

Carson City – Nevada is famous for its solar and geothermal energy resources, but there is only one grid-scale wind farm operating in the state, the Spring Valley Wind facility located on public land roughly 30 miles east of Ely. Pattern Energy developed the Spring Valley facility in 2012, and now Eolus North America is variously scoping 2 new wind power projects in Nevada, one near Searchlight and the other near Carson City. Eolus Wind is a leading wind power . . . Complete story »

The $3 billion plan to turn Hoover Dam into a giant battery

Hoover Dam helped transform the American West, harnessing the force of the Colorado River – along with millions of cubic feet of concrete and tens of millions of pounds of steel – to power millions of homes and businesses. It was one of the great engineering feats of the 20th century. Now it is the focus of a distinctly 21st-century challenge: turning the dam into a vast reservoir of excess electricity, fed by the solar farms and wind turbines that represent the . . . Mojave Road experience in jeopardy

A quintessential rite of passage for Mojave explorers will no longer offer the same journey into unconfined and wild desert that generations of travelers have shared if a Sweden-based company gets its way.  A document released by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under a Freedom of Information Act request indicates that towering wind turbines of the proposed Crescent Peak Wind project would be visible from a majority of the Mojave Road in the eastern Mojave desert. The Mojave Road . . . Complete story »

Being ‘green’ is easy, ignore facts

If you thought the “green movement” was more about self-righteous politics than clear-headed science, here are two tales that prove the point. In Arizona a petition is being circulated in an effort to get on the ballot an initiative called the Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona Amendment. This would require 50 percent of the electricity generated in the state to come from renewable sources by 2030. The petition states: “The Amendment defines renewable energy sources to include solar, wind, . . . Complete story »

Mojave not right for wind farm

A Swedish company proposes to build 240 massive wind turbines on 32,531 acres of public land bordering the Mojave National Preserve, the Castle Mountains National Monument and the Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness, ruining the views and natural atmosphere within these pristine places. We need to generate electricity from wind and solar, but not at the expense of biodiverse ecosystems millions of years in the making. These turbines would be 500 feet tall and require 90 miles of new roads. . . . Complete story »

Renewable energy vs. the environment: Proposed project getting some blowback

The Trump administration’s America First Energy Plan manifests in Southern Nevada with a proposed wind farm on public land 10 miles west of Searchlight. The planned Crescent Peak Wind Energy Project would generate 500 megawatts of electricity (powering up to 150,000 homes), and it would provide up to 1,200 construction jobs and about 20 permanent positions. The project study areas cover 32,531 acres and the final project will have a “permanent disturbance” of up to 750 acres. According to a . . . Complete story »
