Amendment to pause wind turbine development rejected by Colchester council

Protesters gathered outside the Municipality of Colchester offices on Queen Street on Nov. 16. Their signs read “Stop the turbines” and “Don’t destroy our forests.” Inside, council heard remarks from proponents for and against an amendment which would have seen wind turbine development halted until December 2024, when the county would’ve had their municipal planning strategy and land-use bylaw in place. When it came to a vote during the second reading, only four voted affirmatively: Marie Benoit, Laurie Sandeson, Victoria . . . Complete story »

Fire-damaged wind turbine being dismantled

A wind turbine north of Goderich that went up in flames in June of this year is finally being dismantled. The blades and nacelle of the fire-ravaged turbine were being taken apart by a crane Tuesday. The turbine, located on Golf Course Road, caught fire in the early morning hours of June 3, 2023. Goderich fire crews contained the blaze to the turbine itself, letting the fire burn itself out after several hours due to the 100-metre height of the . . . Complete story »

Bird migration endangered by World Energy GH2 project

I am writing in response to a recent article by birding columnist Bruce Mactavish, “Surprise bird spottings during autumn trip to Codroy Valley area.” I’ve been following the development of the World Energy GH2 project on the west coast of Newfoundland with great concern since its announcement in July 2022. The second proposed wind turbine site at the Anguille mountains in the Codroy Valley was a late addition to the project. The people there – and around the province – are only . . . Complete story »

Why the rush on wind energy proposal?

A recent edition of the Weekend Telegram reported on a forum that was convened to discuss the current state of review of the GH2 concept for two massive wind energy farms in southwestern Newfoundland (‘It’s so disheartening’: World Energy project a done deal, Memorial University professor speculates). It was reported that one speaker, Professor Russell Williams, has drawn the conclusion that the project is a fait accompli, a conclusion with which I am inclined to agree. The question being asked . . . Complete story »

Bring on the next boondoggle in N.L. with World Energy GH2

As a taxpayer in this province, I find the environmental assessment published by World Energy GH2 – Project Nujio’qonik on Aug. 22, 2023 very alarming. It alarms me because it clearly states that flora, fauna, and environment will be negatively affected by the construction and operation of this mega-project. It only states that these negative effects will be “mitigated.” How? It doesn’t say. It has completely failed to identify the negative effects of the project on the 4,600 people who . . . World Energy GH2’s environmental impact statement ‘deficient,’ more information needed for decision on Port au Port wind farm

More information is needed about the massive wind farm and hydrogen-ammonia plant proposed for the Port au Port Peninsula before a decision is made whether to approve or deny it, Environment and Climate Change Minister Bernard Davis says. On Wednesday, Nov. 1, Davis said an amendment to World Energy GH2’s environmental impact statement (EIS) is necessary “to inform the significance of the environmental effects.” In a letter to World Energy CEO Sean Leet, Davis said the company’s original EIS was . . . ‘I’m not anti-hydrogen, I’m anti-bullshit’: Why ‘green’ hydrogen is hyped by the oil and gas industry

In a July 27 interview on CBC Halifax Mainstreet, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson, said he had been meeting with EverWind Fuels while he was in Halifax. Wilkinson told host Jeff Douglas that the 2023 federal budget was providing “very generous” investment tax credits for companies like EverWind, which will generate electricity and use the electricity to produce hydrogen. “For the scale of the project the companies like EverWind and others are developing, [the investment tax . . . ‘Not smart for Nova Scotia’: looking under the hood of the hydrogen hype

This week, EverWind Fuels will host public information sessions about two large wind farms it is proposing in Nova Scotia, moving ahead quickly with its ever-shifting plans to find green energy to power its proposed “green hydrogen and ammonia” project in Point Tupper on the Canso Strait. This will be the first time the public will get a look at the scale of two of the wind farms, Bear Lake and Kmtnuk, that EverWind has planned for the province. Two . . . Complete story »

Hermanville, P.E.I. wind farm a ‘fiasco,’ local group tells MLAs

About $10 million in repairs are due to be carried out at the Hermanville, P.E.I. wind farm after structural damage has rendered six of the 10 turbines at the site inoperable. An Eastern Kings group is calling for an inquiry into costly breakdowns of the Hermanville wind farm, which have left six of 10 wind turbines idle. The Hermanville turbines have been operating at reduced capacity for months due to these breakdowns. The P.E.I. Energy Corporation has estimated repairs to . . . Complete story »

Financial hit from faulty wind farm turbines expected to deepen in P.E.I.

Profits at the P.E.I. Energy Corporation were slashed by more than half last year, with auditors warning revenues will drop even further as the Crown enterprise tries to fix one of the province’s biggest wind farms. In its annual report released last week, the P.E.I. Energy Corporation recorded a profit of $3.5 million. That’s less than half of what the utility has posted in any fiscal year since 2014-15, the first full year the Hermanville wind farm in eastern P.E.I. . . . Complete story »
