Cumberland County hears pros, cons of proposed Wentworth Valley wind restrictions

UPPER NAPPAN, N.S. – Any attempt to restrict the placement of wind turbines in the Wentworth Valley without consulting First Nations people could be met with opposition, a representative of the Sipekne’katik First Nation told Cumberland County’s municipal council on Wednesday. Speaking during a public hearing into proposed changes to the county’s land-use bylaw regarding wind turbines, Brian Dorey said his organization has not been consulted by the municipality. “No such bylaw should be passed without meaningful consultation with the . . . Inverness County puts pause on new wind development in Cape Breton

New wind energy development projects have been put on pause for at least six months in Inverness County as municipal council moves to review its wind turbine bylaws. CBC reports that Coun. John MacLennan was the only municipal councillor to vote against the temporary suspension. About 200 people joined a group of citizens in Inverness Country, on Cape Breton Island’s west coast, who are concerned about a proposed wind farm development called the Rhodena Wind project on the hills between . . . No new wind developments in Inverness County for 6 months

Inverness County council has put a six-month hold on any new wind developments in order to review wind turbine bylaws that haven’t been updated since 2012. The decision comes after more than 200 people joined a community group against the proposed Rhodena Wind project, which would bring 15 turbines to the hills between Highway 19 and the Trans-Canada Highway. Coun. John MacLennan, who represents District 4, was the only councillor to vote against the moratorium. He said he isn’t sure . . . Complete story »

Amherst expresses concern with proposed wind farm expansion near town

AMHERST, N.S. – As much as Amherst wants to be known as a green community, even it has limits. Amherst town’s council, while favouring the move to greener energy production, has some concerns with the possible expansion of a wind farm on the marsh outside the community. “We’re huge supporters of green energy, and in principle, we support the idea of wind-generated electrical power,” Mayor David Kogon told the SaltWire Network. “However, we have some legitimate concerns. We don’t want . . . Complete story »

Cumberland County considers wind turbine ban in Wentworth Valley

SPRINGHILL, N.S. – Cumberland County is moving closer to prohibiting the development of wind turbines in the Wentworth Valley. The municipality’s planning and development department has brought forward its recommendations on a new land-use bylaw for wind turbines and is considering adding the valley, that runs along the Cumberland and Colchester County line, to its restricted overlay. “I attended a couple of open sessions on wind turbines in Cumberland and Colchester counties and it was very clear there is little, . . . C.B. wind farm will blight landscape

I am a very concerned citizen of Route 19 on beautiful Cape Breton Island. The Rhodena Wind Farm Project is a proposal by developers from away. They are planning to erect 18 industrial wind turbines of approximately 200 metres in height, with minimal setback or distance to residences. They will become an eyesore between Creignish and Judique. Imagine that! I am all for renewable energy, but not monster industrial turbines within a kilometre of a family dwelling. With all the . . . Citizens concerned about proposed Inverness County wind project

INVERNESS, N.S. – A group of citizens in Inverness Country are concerned about a proposed wind farm development. David Hart, who represents a group of some 200 residents opposed to a wind farm proposed for development on the hills between Highway 19 and Trans-Canada Highway 105, told the CBC that the project doesn’t suit the characteristics of the community and region. The development, called the Rhodena Wind project, is being proposed by Community Wind Farms Inc. and ABO Wind Canada. It . . . Complete story »

Inverness County is the wrong place for a 15-turbine wind farm, say residents

Residents of Nova Scotia’s Inverness County are raising concerns about a proposed wind farm that would bring 15 turbines to the hills between Highway 19 and Trans-Canada Highway 105, along the west coast of the island. David Hart is the spokesperson for the Route 19 Community Association, a group of nearly 200 residents opposed to the project because it is “incompatible with the existing social and cultural and economic characteristics of the community and the local environment.” Hart said the . . . Decision on proposed wind farm delayed as N.S. environment minister seeks more info

Nova Scotia’s environment minister says he doesn’t have enough information to approve a proposal for what could be the province’s largest wind farm. Renewable energy company Natural Forces submitted its plans to the province in January for what it calls the Benjamins Mill Wind Project. Natural Forces is seeking environmental approval to build up to 28 massive turbines near the town of Windsor that would generate up to 150 megawatts of energy – enough to power about 50,000 homes. Environment Minister . . . Complete story »

Wentworth Valley wind opponents seeking wilderness status

WENTWORTH – A group fighting a proposed wind farm in the Wentworth Valley is urging Nova Scotia’s government to declare the area as a wilderness area to protect the mainland moose and prevent future wind development projects. “We want to inhibit industrial wind turbines in areas of important moose habitat and connectivity in Colchester Cumberland,” Folly Lake area resident and Protect Wentworth Valley spokesperson Leslie Dykeman said. “We don’t believe the Wentworth Valley is the right place for industrial wind . . .
