Wind turbine demolition underway in Taylor County

Hundreds of wind turbines are being demolished in Taylor County over the next 6 weeks.

Wind energy company AES is in the process of removing nearly 300 wind turbines from a property off FM 126 and FM 89 in southwest Taylor County after county commissioners declined to renew a long-standing tax abatement.

Video from citizens near the property show the turbines falling with aid of explosives.

A truck driver on site to relocate the fallen windmills told KTAB and KRBC the project will take an estimated 6 weeks to complete.

Taylor County Judge Phil Crowley says commissioners declined to renew the tax abatement because “at some point, a corporation is going to have to stand on their own two feet.”

Crowley also says citizens who live near the property did not want the abatement to continue, largely due to fire concerns raised by the wind turbines.

The existing 282 turbines will be replaced with 117 new turbines (V150-4.5 MW, 120 meters hub height).
