Cayuga County wind farm will do more harm than good

The recent “Turbine truths” interview is very untruthful, as the project manager provided inaccurate and misleading at best answers to appease the public with little significant information provided.

As a 35-year employee at NYSEG and RG&E, I worked with the largest business customers and consider myself highly knowledgeable about the electrical grid, its needs and the various demand response programs in place to keep the power system reliable so no blackouts occur. My degree is in agriculture from Cornell University, and I worked in public policy for New York Farm Bureau.

  • Fact: Wind generation is not dispatchable, meaning it cannot be turned on during the few times each year that the state grid needs extra power. Siting this windfarm was just dumb luck as the power plant that was connected to the transmission line is no longer operating, so the location is optimum for the wind farm as it can easily connect into the grid unlike other locations that are miles from the grid. But the location is poor for wind power which is why the wind turbines will be twice the height of normal wind towers – 60 stories in height.
  • Fact: Once the wind farms are at end of life at approximately 25 years the land will never again be utilized at the same level pre-wind farm. Twenty-five years is a short time.
  • Fact: The cradle to grave carbon emitted from building a wind farm is far greater than the benefit.
  • Fact: Birds migrating from Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, between the lakes, along with other creatures will be killed. Visit Wolfe Island in Canada where the highest kill rate in North America happened when the wind farm was built.
  • Fact: Agricola is owned by a Denmark company that will benefit from U.S. taxpayers subsidizing this project.
  • Fact: There is no plan on how to compensate landowners for the sure to be environmental impact, as the water table will be impacted and wells will likely be contaminated.
  • Fact: The beautiful views will be destroyed, impacting tourism.
  • Fact: Roads used to deliver the turbines and build the windmills aren’t meant to handle the heavier traffic.
  • Fact: Property values will go down and the town coffers will be less due to this. This is a quick money grab that will benefit some, and the locals will be left holding the bag.

Contact your local, state and national officials to fight this.
