Wind farm proposals around the region took centre stage for the third consecutive council meeting as concerned residents filled the public gallery to the brim with signs of protest.
14 residents who live near wind farms proposed in Sunny Corner and Mount Lambie expressed opposition to the projects during public forum on Monday, May 26, citing potential health, environmental and impacts on their businesses as concerns.
Sunny Corner resident Melinda Mills, who lives within 1.1 kilometres of two proposed wind turbines, said the project will negatively impact the community’s livelihoods.
“Our community as a whole is passionately opposed to this proposed industrial development, which will have long-lasting and devastating effects on our lives due to the unprecedented size of the turbines and their proximity to dwellings,” Ms Mills said.
“The vast majority of people attending the Someva drop-in sessions were vocal in their objection to the developmentpeople left in tears. I’ve personally attended five community-run meetings. These meetings were collectively attended by several hundred local people who object to this proposal.”
Annie Scott, Co-Principal of Karoo Angus Stud at the family property in Meadow Flat, said the wind turbines will impact her family’s third-generation business.
“As a generational beef farmer deeply rooted in this land for generations, we also employ three full-time staff and have seven contractors who carry out various tasks at Karoo,” Ms Scott said. “Our family has dedicated decades to preserving the integrity of the land. We have been nurturing resources and fostering a harmonious relationship with the environment and our neighbours since 1989. However, the introduction of wind turbines threatens to undermine the foundation upon which this legacy was built. The proposed wind farms will affect us as beef farmers by noise and site.”
Frank Boland, the Director of Tetris Energy, who has wind farm proposals in Ben Bullen and Mount Lambie, sent a statement addressing why the region is subject to many future energy project proposals. Lithgow Council Director of People and Places, Shaun Elwood, read the statement on Mr Boland’s behalf.
“There is no region more synonymous with power generation in NSW than Lithgow and surrounds. The Lithgow community has also facilitated electricity transmission infrastructure for many years,” the statement said. “This existing electricity infrastructure and the prospect of committing new renewable energy projects to it are a key reason why multiple state-significant renewable developments are proposed within the region. These state-significant projects like Tetris Energy’s proposed wind farms are an opportunity for Lithgow to honour its legacy as a key energy generator.”
