Wexford wind farm given 20-year extension despite noise complaints

Wexford County Council has recently granted a 20-year extension to Castledockrell Wind Farm, including the continued use of 11 existing turbines, despite a neighbouring couple’s objection.

Catherine and Philip Hickey have actively campaigned against the development for years, submitting complaints to local authority, engaging with the media, and even speaking at Leinster House.

In their letter to the local authority, they detailed that it was not just their family affected, but claim that the entire neighbourhood had been under siege of the shadow flicker and noise permeated by the turbines.

“We have lived in rural areas for almost 30 years. What we hear now is very much industrial and mechanical in its nature and noise from a turbine can clearly be distinguished and identified. The reality is the noise that does emanate from them could be argued to be actual noise pollution particularly in rural areas such as where we live,” they outlined.

“We can often hear turbine noise distinctively outside our home and even inside our home when all doors and windows are closed. Some days it is a necessity for us to have to close the doors and windows to block out the sound. As the turbines can operate on a 24/7 basis it is often the case that our rest and sleep periods are disrupted.”

Regardless, the planning department decided on Friday, May 9 to grant permission as long as a number of conditions are followed.

Among the conditions, the farm will have to make sure all waste and oil from the site is disposed of, taking cognisance of relevant waste legislation.
