A proposed wind farm project prompted a massive turnout Thursday night at a planning commission meeting in Dickinson County. The majority of the crowd strongly opposes what’s planned.

Commissioners met to consider allowing a 334-megawatt wind farm in multiple townships. The hours-long Dickinson County Planning Commission meeting convened in Herington Thursday night after covering one agenda item: consideration of a wind farm.

The commission heard from Hope Ridge Wind Project representatives about the plans to erect a wind farm in seven townships within Dickinson County. 12 News spoke with several who attended the meeting to voice opposition.

“Our children deserve to see a sunrise and sunset without wind turbines,” said Dickinson County resident Therese Lee.

Others shared concerns about the large structures obscuring views of the rural sky, as well as the noise and what they say is the potential for health problems.

“You can guarantee me no problems without them but you can’t guarantee me it once you build them,” Lee said.

Beyond what’s planned to go up, the opposition is concerned about what happens after the turbines are in place.

“Are these gonna be here forever? Is this company gonna be here forever? Are they financially sound to decommission them?” questioned Dickinson County resident Dale Anders.

Once the public comment is closed, planning commissioners can recommend approval for the project with special conditions or recommend denial of the project with a possible two-year moratorium. Dickinson County commissioners will have the final say.
