An Bord Pleanála (ABP) has rejected a planning application by Coolglass Windfarm Limited to erect 13 wind turbines measuring 180 meters in height between The Swan, Wolfhill, Luggacurren, Fossey and Timahoe.
The decision upheld the planners in Laois County Council’s decision to also reject the application when it can before them last year.
The company’s proposal was to locate the turbines over 184 acres in the townlands of Fossy Upper, Aghoney, Gorreelagh, Knocklead, Scotland, Brennanshill, Monamantry, Coolglass, Crissard, Kylenabehy, Monamanry, Brennanshill, Knocklead, Timahoe, Carrigeen, Ballygormill South, Money Upper, Hophall, Rathleague, Ballymooney and Rathbrennan.
Announcing the news Junior Minister and local TD Sean Fleming said the reason why ABP rejected the application was because: “The area is considered not suitable for windfarms in the Laois County Development Plan. The planning regulator subsequently agreed with this, and the Minister eventually also agreed.
“When this (application) went before ABP they had no object but to reject it. All other considerations regarding issues that the applicant raises are not relevant, because everybody involved in the planning process has said, That this is not an appropriate location.
Describing the ABP decision as “good news for the local communities in the area and I would ask the developers to pack up their bags, go away and not contest this decision or reapply.
He said that he was fully supportive of renewable energy projects “but this must be located in suitable areas. For instance, I supported the Gortahile Windfarm in Laois some years ago, as it was in a proper location and it’s good to see this windfarm producing renewable energy for many years now.”
