Tornado topples wind turbines in Iowa

Credit:  by: Natalie Nunn. Posted: May 22, 2024 / ozarksfirst.com ~~

The National Weather Service has confirmed at least an EF-3 tornado tore through Iowa, toppling massive wind turbines in its path. The wind turbines were located near the town of Greenfield, Iowa, which took a direct hit.

While the preliminary report says it was an EF-3 tornado, the NWS office says that ranking could change, “Additional damage evaluation will continue over the next several days and results are subject to change.”

According to our sister station, WHO13, several 250-foot* wind turbines were brought to the ground. Some of the turbines caught fire and were smoldering for hours. While wind turbines are built to withstand impressive wind speeds, they do shut off when winds exceed certain speeds, usually around 55 MPH.

Greenfield, Iowa is a town with a population near 2,000 and is about 50 miles southwest of Des Moines.

[*The towers alone in this facility are 95 meters high – 312 feet – and the blade radius (Vestas V110) is 110 meters, adding 55 meters – 180 feet – to each turbine’s total height, for a total of 492 feet.]
