Environmental group condemns drilling operations in Masungi for wind farm

The Environmental Defenders Congress (EDC) opposed the ongoing drilling operations for the construction of the Rizal-Laguna wind power project that will impact the Masungi Georeserve, a conservation area and a rustic rock garden located in Rizal.

EDC Spokesperson Jean Lindo stressed the group’s opposition in a statement on Thursday.

“EDC strongly condemns the ongoing drilling operations for the construction of the 102 MW Rizal-Laguna Wind Power Project, currently being undertaken by Aboitiz Renewables in a joint venture with Singapore-based Vena Energy,” said Lindo.

According to the group, Masungi Georeserve’s drone surveillance revealed that the drilling activity conducted by the Rizal Wind Energy Corporation “blatantly violated conservation regulations.”

“Despite prohibitions and the area’s designation as a strict protection zone, the company plans to construct 12 wind turbines. This poses a clear threat to local wildlife and the irreparable limestone formations. Additionally, it’s uncertain if the company secured an Environmental Compliance Certificate for the operations, raising serious doubts about its ability to mitigate the environmental destruction anticipated in the area,” said Lindo.

With this, EDC stressed its support for calls for revocation of permits in order to cease further destruction of the sanctuary.

“Apart from the expected significant environmental impact on fragile ecosystems, this venture also forebodes future attacks on the forest rangers of Masungi Georeserve, who have experienced attacks in the past,” said Lindo.
