Emergency services have contained a fire at a wind turbine in the NSW Southern Tablelands.

The turbine on a rural property at Breadalbane, near Goulburn, started at about six o’clock this morning.

Rural Fire Services spokesman Greg Allan said about 20 firefighters in six trucks responded to the fire.

“They were on scene to make sure no fires were sparked from the fire within the structure itself,” Mr Allan said.

“Crews were able to have that fire contained with no threat to properties nearby.”

“The incident was handed over to the local contractor of the turbine and crews left the scene at around 11 o’clock this morning.”

Mr Allan said power to the turbine had been cut in what was an unusual call-out for fire crews.

“At this time of year RFS crews and fire agencies are most likely dealing with grass and bushfires,” he said.

“This is quite a unique incident.”

The turbine is part of the Cullerin Range wind farm which was sold by Origin Energy to EDL Energy in 2016.

According to the National Electricity Market the wind farm was generating about 25 megawatts of power shortly before the fire started.
