Massive wind turbine bursts into flames as fire crews race to tackle blaze

A massive wind turbine has caught fire in Aberdeenshire.

It is understood the 18.5 metre high wind turbine caught fire around 2.15pm today.

Fire crews from Laurencekirk and Montrose are currently at the scene.

Two fire engines were mobilised to the scene but were not needed as the site was made safe.

An image posted from the scene north of St Cyrus, off the B9120 road, shows a black plume of smoke and flames bursting from the energy generator.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: ” We were alerted at 2.14pm on Wednesday, 23 November to reports of a fire affecting a wind turbine near Mains of Lauriston, Aberdeenshire.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where crews remain onsite and are liaising with onsite personnel to make the area safe.

“No firefighting was required.”
