Time for a reality check on wind power

South Wales Evening Post, 20 Oct 2022

David Naylor (Post letters, October 17) needs a reality check if he thinks his “majestic” wind turbines can power the huge 68 million population of the UK and its 38 million vehicles.

As I write, at 11.40am on October 18, the National Grid website, Gridwatch.co.uk tells us that thousands of UK wind turbines, on both land and sea, are only collectively generating 940MW, whilst the UK is using 35,190MW on a mild autumn day – with very few electric cars! So wind energy provides a mere 2.6% of our needs today.

Will Mr Naylor please explain what will power the UK in future, when we are under a bitterly cold, windless, winter high pressure? UK demand will rise to 60,000MW; UK wind energy will drop to around 100MW and solar energy will be nilduring 17-hour nights!

Then, 38 million small electric cars, after 2030, will need extra power to be available in the grid. Where is all that electricity, Mr Naylor? Please tell us! You are totally impractical, like many politicians!

Get a grip on figures or we will have wide-scale hypothermia in a completely wrecked economy some winter very soon!

L J Jenkins,
Gwbert
