New wind energy development projects have been put on pause for at least six months in Inverness County as municipal council moves to review its wind turbine bylaws.
CBC reports that Coun. John MacLennan was the only municipal councillor to vote against the temporary suspension.
About 200 people joined a group of citizens in Inverness Country, on Cape Breton Island’s west coast, who are concerned about a proposed wind farm development called the Rhodena Wind project on the hills between Highway 19 and Trans-Canada Highway 105. MacLennan said he is not sure why there is opposition to the project.
The development is being proposed by Community Wind Farms Inc. and ABO Wind Canada. Community Wind had recently changed the proposed layout of the project in response to community feedback, reducing the number of turbines to 15 from 18.
Community Wind CEO Keith Towse told the CBC he expected the county to freeze wind projects while it reviews its 10-year-old wind bylaws.
He said the company will continue to move forward with project planning.
The company expects to hear back about a project bid submitted to the province in the fall.
