Fire destroys wind turbine

Ben Jones | Peterborough Telegraph | 28 Apr 2022 |

A blaze destroyed a wind turbine in Thorney.

The fire broke out at the turbine on French Drove at around 5:45pm on Sunday and was attended to by both Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue services.

A crew from Crowland arrived before handing the incident over to a crew from Dogsthorpe.

Nearby residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while the blades and the motor of the turbine were still alight.

The cost of installing a new turbine on the site could be well over £1m.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be revealed but it is believed to have been an electrical fault. Fire services have described it as “accidental.”

A spokesperson from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “A crew arrived to find a wind turbine well alight, involving the motorand blades. No firefighting action was taken.

“The incident was handed over firefighters from Dogsthorpe, before being left with the wind turbine company.

“The cause of the fire was accidental.”

An investigation has revealed the cause of a blaze which shut the A605 near Peterborough for a number of hours.

The road was closed at Rings End from 6.30am on Thursday until just after 10am causing long delays.

Firefighters from from Stanground, Thorney, March and Wisbech arrived to find a fire involving a farm building, spreading to a shed and a garage.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was started accidentally, with an electrical fault to blame.
