Citizens concerned about proposed Inverness County wind project

INVERNESS, N.S. – A group of citizens in Inverness Country are concerned about a proposed wind farm development.

David Hart, who represents a group of some 200 residents opposed to a wind farm proposed for development on the hills between Highway 19 and Trans-Canada Highway 105, told the CBC that the project doesn’t suit the characteristics of the community and region.

The development, called the Rhodena Wind project, is being proposed by Community Wind Farms Inc. and ABO Wind Canada. It is expected that 15 wind turbines in the area would produce 100 megawatts of power.

Community Wind CEO Keith Towse told the CBC that the company has changed the proposed layout of the project in response to community feedback so that the closest turbines are 1,700 metres from the nearest home and more than three kilometres from Highway 19.

An area of about 3,700 hectares is being considered for the development, while Community Wind anticipates the area used for the project, including turbines, a road and transmission lines, will have a 655-hectare footprint.
