Plans on the table to treble onshore wind power by 2035

Boris Johnson is considering plans to treble onshore wind power by 2035 in a push to use more renewable energy after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Kwasi Kwarteng, the business secretary, has proposed doubling onshore wind turbine power from 14 gigawatts to 30GW by 2030, with the bulk of the new turbines in Scotland.

He has also suggested that the government could go further by trying to hit a target of 45GW of energy from offshore wind by 2035.

The subject is being discussed by ministers as part of an energy strategy that has been delayed because of rows. It is due to be published on Thursday, but could be delayed until after Easter.

Other cabinet ministers are understood to be resolutely opposed to onshore wind.
