Latvia rejects Orsted offshore wind farm plan

Application turned down while Latvian and Estonian authorities search for a location for the Elwind project | 18 March 2022 | renews.biz

Orsted’s application to develop an offshore wind farm in Latvian waters has been rejected by Latvia’s Ministry of Economics and State Chancellery.

The planned project, which was to be developed adjacent to Enefit’s Liivi project in Estonian waters, has been rejected while the Latvian and Estonian authorities search for a suitable location for the Elwind project.

Enefit will continue to develop the Liivi offshore wind farm in Estonia, said chief executive Hando Sutter.

Orsted head of markets for the continental Europe region Peter Obling said: “The Latvian Ministry of Economics and State Chancellery has decided to decline Orsted’s application for a site in Latvian waters, while the Ministry considers the possible location of the announced Elwind project.

“The application may be re-opened, subject to the outcome of the Elwind site selection process.

“Orsted remains committed to developing offshore wind in the Baltics and to our partnership with Enefit in the region.”

Sutter said the current environmental impact assessment process for the Liivi project will be completed by 2023.

“The intention of Enefit will be to be ready for the investment decision by 2025,” he added.

Orsted and Enefit said work on analysing potential projects is continuing.
