New Ayrshire wind farm could neighbor major project under construction near Dalmellington

A new wind farm has been proposed for East Ayrshire which would neighbor a mega site currently being constructed.

Renewable energy firm Vattenfall has unveiled plans for an additional 17 turbines to be installed near Dalmellington.

South Kyle Wind Farm II will bring enough energy to power 60,000 homes.

The mega-structures soaring to a height of 220m could generate up to 199MW of renewable energy.

Bosses say the proposals are at an early stage but the new earmarked site comes hot on the heels of South Kyle Wind Farm – which once complete will bring 50 turbines to the area.

The current Vattenfall project already under construction is awaiting the delivery of huge turbines which are set to pass through Ayr.

Major road works continue at Whitletts roundabout as the central reservation is ‘lowered’ to allow huge turbines to make their way through the busy junction.

Frank Elsworth, Vattenfall’s Head of UK Onshore Development, said: “Our proposals for South Kyle II Wind Farm reflects Vattenfall’s continuing commitment to South West Scotland, creating yet more opportunities for local communities and businesses through multi-million-pound investment in Scotland’s drive to netzero.”

Proposals for the new site are said to be at an early stage with bosses keen to get listen to views and concerns from communities in the area.

A scoping report is being submitted to the Scottish Government, and Vattenfall will now embark on a detailed environmental impact assessment.

Simon Lejeune, Vattenfall’s Lead Project Development Manager, said: “We want to hear from local communities to understand their priorities so we can design a wind farm that respects local constraints.

“We’re looking to reduce the impact of the wind farm on the environment and the people who live locally while creating opportunities through community investment, skills development, jobs and employment.”

A further two proposals are expected to be submitted to planning authorities later this year meaning South Kyle II would be Vattenfall’s fourth project in the region.

Proposals could be set to benefit the local economy with Vattenfall confirming they have pioneered the use of local companies, encouraging and enabling contractors to hire and buy locally wherever possible.

Recent analysis of South Kyle Wind Farm’s supply chain has shown £44million of spending awarded to businesses in Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway, rising to £93million with businesses across Scotland. The project also includes a bespoke community benefit arrangement.
