On one of the wind turbines operated by “Bürgerwind Gronau Epe” in Füchte, a blade broke off on Sunday morning. A few meters away from the hub, the blade buckled, crashed to the ground and landed in the immediate vicinity of the tower. Smaller parts of the wing came down tens of meters away in the field – even beyond the service road. No one was injured.

Marion Figur, a resident a few hundred meters away on Hohe Weg, experienced the incident: “It was around 9 o’clock when I was outside in the garden. Then I heard a sound as if a fully loaded truck was driving across the road. Really scary,” she told the newsroom. Her eyes fell on the wind turbine, where parts of the blade were falling down at that moment.

Reinhard Leuderalbert also witnessed the incident. He was jogging in the area with his wife and acquaintance Stefan Borchert, and witnessed the blade fall. “The noise was terrifying and frightening. We just ran away,” he tells WN.

The alarmed emergency forces from the police and fire department cordoned off the area around the wind turbine over a wide area.

One of the managing directors of Bürgerwind, Norbert Sundermann, made himself a picture of the situation in the morning. “This is of course grist for the mills of the wind power opponents,” he said concerned, while he tried to contact the manufacturing company. Sundermann suspected – without wanting to prejudge the results of the investigations – a material defect in the production of the blade. “It didn’t break off at the hub, after all.”

During the day, representatives of the manufacturing company came to Epe to discuss further steps with the operators. As Johannes Bügener, also managing director of Bürgerwind, said when asked, the debris will be secured and examined. Also it applies to take up contact with the authorities and insurance companies. Further information is expected on Monday.

The identically constructed sister turbine was taken off the grid on Sunday. The two wind turbines each have a total height of 240 meters (hub height 161 meters, rotor diameter 158 meters). The [maximum rate of electricity production] per wind turbine is 5.3 megawatts. The two wind turbines have been spinning for only a few weeks.
