MARSHALL – A clean energy company is looking for potential sites for a 400-megawatt wind energy project in Lyon County, the Lyon County Board learned this week. A spokesperson for Apex Clean Energy told county commissioners Apex has been meeting with landowners in the southern part of the county.

Drew Christensen of Apex Clean Energy spoke with Lyon County commissioners at their regular meeting Tuesday. Christensen said the company was planning for a future wind energy project. Apex was looking for possible sites in an area including the eight southernmost townships in Lyon County and the 10 northernmost townships in Murray County.

Apex had a target of building a 400-megawatt wind project. While there weren’t a lot of details yet available for the project, Christensen said it could potentially have a total of 80 wind towers.

“I think we can conservatively say they will be five-megawatt towers,” he said.

However, Christensen said the wind project was something that was still five or six years down the road. At this point, Apex was mostly looking for land to lease, he said.

Apex Clean Energy has opened an office in the former Colonial Manor nursing home in Balaton.

“We’re really excited to be in Balaton,” Christensen said.

Apex has seen interest from landowners in Lyon County, Christensen said. About 150 people attended a meeting on the Apex project that was held near Garvin, he said.
