Wind farm project eyes up Skateraw

Cables connecting one of the largest proposed offshore wind farms in the world could come ashore at Skateraw.

SSE Renewables is currently working on plans for Berwick Bank Wind Farm, which would be 40 kilometres off the coast of East Lothian.

Now, the developers claim they have reached “a major project milestone”, with a site identified for the cables to come onshore.

Skateraw, to the south-east of Dunbar, is the preferred location for its onshore hub, with another potential site having been considered at nearby Thorntonloch.

Following further engineering and design work, the company has announced its intention to proceed with the landfall location at Skateraw.

Andrew Fowler, lead project engineer, said: “We originally began the site selection process over a year ago, with two potential landfall options and eight potential substation locations under consideration.

“We are delighted to be in a position to present to the public our intended landfall, cable route and substation locations and the reasoning behind these decisions.”

SSE Renewables is hosting a public exhibition at Innerwick Village Hall this afternoon (Thursday) between 1pm and 7pm to discuss the most recent project updates with the local community, and all interested parties are encouraged to attend.

Pamela Phillips, project manager, encouraged people to head along to the meeting.

She said: “The coming months represent a crucial time for the project as we finalise our plans ahead of submitting a planning application in early 2022.

“Berwick Bank Wind Farm has a capacity of 4.1GW and represents a crucial step in the journey to Scotland meeting its ambitious net-zero targets.”

Berwick Bank will connect to the electricity grid at Branxton, near Torness.

The developers are yet to announce how many turbines could be built on the site or the height of the proposed structures.
