New to Providence skyline: Pieces of massive new wind turbines arrive at Providence port

PROVIDENCE – Pieces of three new wind turbines that will rise over the waterfront arrived in the Port of Providence on Monday.

The 1.5-megawatt Vensys turbines arrived by ship from Germany and will be installed by Cranston-based Green Development at the southern end of Fields Point, on land owned by ProvPort and Johnson & Wales University.

They will join another trio of wind turbines that went up in 2012 just to the north at the wastewater treatment plant operated by the Narragansett Bay Commission.

The new turbines will have the same generating capacity as those operated by the Bay Commission, and will each stand 325 feet high when their blade tips are at the highest point.

Although Green Development installed larger turbines in Johnston, siting issues and height restrictions prevented the company from going with the bigger model in Providence.
