Council rejects planning permission application for Cahermurphy wind farm

17th July 2021 | www.clare.fm

Plans for a controversial wind farm in West Clare have been rejected by Clare County Council.

The proposal for the project near Kilmihil had received significant opposition from a number of local residents.

Plans for the 10-turbine wind farm were lodged by Mid Clare Renewable Energy Windfarm Ltd in September 2020.

They have now been rejected by the local authority.

An environmental impact statement lodged with the application had stated that the proposed project would have created 72 jobs and that, over the lifetime of the wind farm, a community benefit fund of €5.6m would have been made available.

Members of the Cahermurphy Wind Farm Phase II Opposition Group had previously said they were concerned about the potential negative impact from any windfarm, including shadow, flicker and noise, and that there was an over saturation of such projects in the area.

The applicants, as with any planning application, have the right to appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanala, though it’s not yet known if they will do so.
