Councils’ decisions anxiously awaited

Both Sligo and Leitrim County Councils will make a decision on the proposed Coillte Croagh wind farm near Dromahair this week.
Nearly 200 submissions were made to the local planning authorities in relation to the construction of these giant wind turbines, which, if built would be over 70% higher than any existing turbines in the area.
One submission from Leitrim Wind Industry Awareness contains comments and signatures from120 concerned citizens.
Other submissions outline concerns regarding the giant scale of the proposed turbines, their productivity which is likely to be only 33% of claimed capacity, the risk of landslides, (during construction of the Garvagh Glebe wind farm which is adjacent to propose site, there was a landslide, spreading pollution far and wide), the cumulative impact on the environment, increased noise, shadow flicker inside local homes and the loss of biodiversity.
Wind Aware Dromahair is questioning the need for yet another wind farm. There are already 15 in close proximity to the proposed Croagh site. Concerns are mounting regarding the cumulative impact of such large-scale developments on the environment, on tourism and on the wellbeing of the local people.
Currently there are plans for an additional 5 wind farms within a 30 km radius of each other in North Leitrim, plus a large-scale battery storage plant. 64% of electricity used in Leitrim is already produced by wind energy. (ref: Good Energies Alliance Ireland 2019, Croga report) Local resident and tourism provider Graham Robertson ‘We have more than our fair share of industrial wind turbines, it is time now to concentrate on tourism not turbines.’
Concerned people say NO to Giant wind turbines in Leitrim and Sligo and YES to smaller scale sustainable renewable solutions that truly create employment and are less damaging to our precious landscape.
