More expensive

Letters | The SandPaper | May 19, 2021 | www.thesandpaper.net

Regarding “Local Wind Concerns” (5/5), I would like to add an additional concern. If this wind farm is foisted on the public, it will raise electricity prices paid by LBI and Southern Ocean County electric users. Here are the facts that many politicians and promoters of offshore wind power don’t want the public to think about.

Offshore wind power has sky-high maintenance and premature equipment retirements and replacements simply because the units under discussion will be placed directly on an ocean of one of the most corrosive materials on Earth – salt water. Those additional costs will be passed along to electricity users on the adjacent coast such as those served by Atlantic City Electric and Jersey Central Power & Light. The cost per kilowatt hour for offshore wind will run about 40 cents versus natural gas-produced electric with a cost of 10 to 12 cents per kilowatt hour.

Nuclear is slightly less expensive than natural gas-fired electric generation.

To the added costs involved in this wind farm project, you also have the risks of ship collisions right in the middle of one of the busiest shipping routes in the world in and out of New York Harbor.

Get your wallets handy for this latest alternative tax grab.
