Is wind turbine plan for or against the people?

Letter | SaltWire | www.saltwire.com

Dear Mr. “For the People” King:

Please do not allow IRAC and the P.E.I. Energy Corporation to pave the way for your government to vote “against the people” of Eastern Kings by allowing further wind farm expansion at East Point, P.E.I.

The Rural Municipality of Eastern Kings (RMEK) followed a very challenging and discerning process and voted a clear “No” to the proposed application of P.E.I. Energy Corp to build 600-foot-high windmills in a very sensitive ecological area.

Eastern Kings residents who will be most affected are overwhelmingly opposed to the proposed expansion.

RMEK council members referenced RMEK official plan, environmental bylaws, financial impact, community feedback etc. in coming to their final decision and vote.

Surely a government “for the people” would not undermine a municipal council decision to satisfy P.E.I. Energy Corp’s ill planned agenda.

To anyone who questions the RMEK decision, please refer to the public minutes from their Oct. 22, 2020 meeting where council members respectfully addressed pros and cons and their reasonings for their majority no vote.

For example (and this is just one example) the P.E.I. Energy Corp., in its wisdom, proposed that the province would meet (promised) 17 conditions to allow the expansion to go ahead at East Point. One of these conditions (Condition 12) proposed that the province would purchase “42 hectares of land and preserve it for the environment to replace the 14 hectares” of old growth forest that would be destroyed at East Point during the process of installing seven (600-foot-high) wind turbines.

As one RMEK council member put it on Oct. 22, 2020, “I don’t believe that planting a new forest in another area is going to make up for the loss of the old growth forest and its habitat.”

I so agree with our council member. It is hard to understand how a government “for the people” would even consider destroying an old growth “green energy” forest to make “green energy”.

It simply makes no sense.

Ronelda MacDonald,

East Point, P.E.I.
