Another large wind play is seeking regulator approval

A fourth major wind farm for the area west of Seven Persons is before provincial utility regulators.

Winnifred Wind would be located near the County of Forty Mile hamlet of the same name, built by Enerfin Canada, a subsidiary of Spanish renewable development company Elecnor.

That company submitted plans to local municipalities over the last year and on April 30 applied to the Alberta Utilities Commission to build the project.

The project would involve erecting 22 turbines and a 37-kilometre underground collector network on portions of 33 quarter sections of privately owned land about five kilometres north of the hamlet of Winnifred.

It would produce 120-megawatts of power in peak conditions. The facility would be connected to the Fortis distribution grid via a new 25-kilometre line that runs through a portion of Cypress County.

Enerfin’s timeline states that if approval is granted this fall, road, substation and foundation work would begin the mid 2022, and the facility could be commissioned in the fall of 2023.

It would become the latest major wind project southwest of Medicine Hat.

Capital power completed the first phase of the Whitla Wind farm in late 2019 and has announced plans to build two expansions.

In the same region south of Bow Island, Suncor Forty Mile will move ahead, the oil giants announced this winter, and the Rattlesnake Ridge wind farm, near Whitla, is underway.
