NYS Public Service Commission still accepting resident comments on proposed Guilford wind farm

The New York State Public Service Commission held a virtual public statement hearing Thursday afternoon to receive comments concerning the Guilford wind turbines project.

High Bridge Wind, LLC is seeking a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the Commission. This certificate would authorize the company to construct and operate a proposed major wind farm, while subject to the terms and conditions of the Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need that has already been issued last month.

In addition, High Bridge’s petition asks that the Commission find and determine that High Bridge is entitled to lightened regulation as a wholesale electric generator.

Thursday’s public statement hearing lasted last than a half-hour and featured only a few resident speakers.

“My wife Barbara and I own property, across from Mount Upton, right across the river,” said Guilford resident John Kovalchik. “We believe strongly we will be affected by 10 to 12 of the highest windmills yet erected, that we saw the comments in Axios I believe was the name a couple of years ago over that horizon, and we believe that peace and beauty of nature will be marred by the towers. Local workers may not benefit much because of the highly specialized work planned with skills, equipment, and engineering. Therefore, why are we going to be the experiment for mills which are twice as big as any yet?”

Concerned residents who were unable to attend the public hearing still have the opportunity to submit a comment by visiting the public safety website, sending an email, or giving them a call.
