Norfolk villagers win legal battle to stop wind farm

Approval for a huge wind farm off the coast of Norfolk has been overturned by the High Court after a crowdfunded legal challenge concerning onshore infrastructure.

Vattenfall’s Norfolk Vanguard project was granted planning consent by the government in July and would entail up to 158 turbines about 30 miles offshore, generating enough electricity to power 2 million homes.

It would connect to the national electricity grid through a 37-mile cable from landfall at Happisburgh to a new substation near the village of Necton.

Residents objected to the visual impact of the substation, together with another planned for a second proposed Vattenfall wind farm, Norfolk Boreas.

Ray Pearce, who lives near the cable route, brought a legal challenge on behalf of local residents arguing that the
