Reading Wind Facility ‘not fully operational’ due to severe cold

At least one wind energy facility near Emporia has had to adjust to the extreme cold this week.

The Reading Wind Facility is “not fully operational” at this time, according to Southern Power spokesperson Susie Bridges. There is no official word on how many turbines have been taken offline over the past several days.

The plant is part of the Southwest Power Pool network, but when it was finished last year, the plan was for it to create enough wind energy to offset as much as 12 percent of Royal Caribbean’s annual carbon emissions. The 24,000-acre facility near Reading can generate up to 200 megawatts of power under normal circumstances.

KVOE News has also reached out to EDP Renewables for a status report on the wind energy facility outside Waverly. Details are pending. That facility can also provide up to 200 megawatts of power under normal conditions.
