Circular Head community to meet on wind farm concerns

A major renewable energy project with aspects that “don’t sit well” among its nearby community will be the subject of a public meeting on Thursday night.

“Unhappy” members of the Circular Head community and from across Tasmania will gather at the Smithton rec centre to discuss a set of major renewable energy projects currently under development by UPC Robbins Island, says Montagu fisherman Craig Garland.

Included in the plans is about 122 wind turbines destined for Robbins Island, a renewable energy park at the nearby Jim’s Plain and more than 100 kilometres of transmission line from Circular Head across to Burnie.

Mr Garland will be one of the speakers at the event, along with BirdLife Tasmania’s Dr Eric Woehler.

“I’m pretty well versed on quite a few aspects of it,” Mr Garland said.

“We’ll see how it goes on the night. Dr Woehler will talk about the birds – the two million breeding pairs of mutton birds, on of the largest albatross populations on the planet.

“We’re here to give the community voices, the greater majority of the community is against this project.”

The meeting will be held from 6pm-8pm at the Circular Head Rec Centre, Smithton.
